Regina Spektor - Soviet Kitsch

For most, including myself, the first Regina experience comes from one of the radio tracks off of her hit record Begin To Hope. Although I find them to be equally beautiful records, there is something about Soviet Kitsch that i always come back to. The instrumentation of this record is very simple if not just piano and vocals, which i believe is a driving element of what sets this out in a world of over produced music and made for radio hits. Regina, being classically trained in piano brings out a lot of these elements in her songwriting but at the same time knows what the people want to hear. I have yet to hear a song of hers that lacks sincerity in its vocals, which is something I love. I have seen Regina once live at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in 2007. Her performance was a great mixture and span of her writing ability. And what amazed me the most was her ability to connect with such a large crowd on such a personal level. Although she was playing the second largest stage at the festival to a bounty of fans, it felt like she was singing the songs to me personally in the comfort of my living room. There will always be a place in my heart for Regina and her music. Not only is she an amazing singer/songwriter/pianist, she seems to remain quite humble and sincere as she gains more and more attention from the public.
