Still wearing my business attire, I approached the house which I assumed to be Slaughterhouse Five. I was caught off guard when I walked around the house, where there was only a small collection of people hanging out on the porch outside (which I later learned was not actually SH5s porch). I could hear the music coming from inside, but no trail coming and going from the basement and no collection of people outside using the space to drink and socialize as I'd grown accustomed to in the parts of Boston that I've inhabited for the past few years. I pushed in a small door which could have lead to Narnia for all I knew, but in a way it sort of did in its own little punk rock dream sequence of a way. I made my way into the basement, where the audience was captivated by the music of the tattle tales. Unfortunately for me, I was not dressed for the occasion and as per usual was beginning to sweat through my clothes. I contacted adam demirjian, who had just moved out of his parents house for the first time to a residence on Twombly Street and from there I spent my first bit of time in a space that taught me a whole lot about myself over the course of a year. I can remember vividly how much light was coming through the windows of the rooms on the second floor which was his roommate cody's room at the time. The band we were going to see was Lemuria, a band that I had listened to for quite some time but never had a chance to see. After persuading the others to come along I made my way back to Ham St, which I had realized was only a short walk from there. I made it there in good time as people had just started to congregate outside before Lemuria and I quickly made my way to the front, as it can be a bit harder to get close here. But thats not to say if you really want to see the band you couldn't make amends. I liked that about this place. People braced themselves on the low beams of the ceiling as nearly everyone in the room attempted to ease forward and sing the lyrics back to the band. I couldn't help but think to myself that I would never have an opportunity like that to see this band afterwards, and that sentiment has stood true. Unfortunately, I wouldn't return to this basement until I played it with Shire in the spring of next year. We shared the bill with slaughterhouse staples Billy Raygun and The Young Leaves, as well as New Jersey's Brick Mower. Everyone at Slaughterhouse was exceptionally accommodating to a band that I'm sure most people weren't familiar with. Playing there was one of the most ideal settings I've ever performed in undoubtedly. Not to mention, we were added to this show within roughly two days of it happening if I can recall, as we had been scheduled to play Dover's premier burrito joint, Dos Amigos Burritos with our friends The Brave Little Abacus the night before and had intended on staying up in Dover for the weekend anyways. It was really awesome for Zac to do that for us as Shire had only played with his band once before. This unfortunately was also the last good bit of time that I stayed at that apartment. Most humbling about this weekend though, was the two events I would attend the next day. The first of which was a matinee performance of the bands Black Wine and Night Birds at slaughterhouse. I had yet to see either Jeff or Joe's post-ergs project, and again, it proved to be a perfect venue to see some of your favorite musicians perform with a group for the first time. After getting intensely assaulted by the thrash of Night Birds, I made my way to the UNH campus where I witnessed Zack Onett perform his original composition "puppy" for the first time in front of an audience. I can easily say that not a single person in that room left the room unaffected by his performance, though, those lucky enough to know him were obviously moved more than others. Those performances that weekend provoked me in so many different emotional ways, and really defined emerging thoughts on how music should be portrayed. I witnessed two more shows after that one, including Billy Raygun's record release with BIG EYES as well as their final show featuring a reunion from HUNCHBACK who had performed the ergs! reunion that I attended in the previous december. There were times during both of those nights that seemed somewhat surreal, because it seemed as though people in attendance knew that this could likely be one of the last times they would be in that space. The performances themselves were nothing less than impeccable and the atmosphere was as positive as ever considering the dark cloud of uncertainty above. The people of Slaughterhouse Five really made what I had only heard about and pictured in my head in my dreams and on the world wide web, obviously. Despite the fact that all the basements I'd known had all long passed due to the nature of the crowd being that not everyone was there for the music, they proved me that this didn't always have to be the case. Sometimes you have to be strict to maintain such a positive atmosphere, but it is always worth it if it means that your favorite bands come and play in a space that they can appreciate. And for once, the bands will get paid, by people who understand the importance of donations and don't go spending that money on the beer they *have to* bring to the show. Slaughterhouse was something that brought what I'd only pictured punk being, into a reality and for that I am forever grateful.
~ R.I.P. type='text'>Big D and the Kids Table

Tonight, for the first time ever my band is playing with Big D and the Kids Table!? And surprisingly I have extremely mixed emotions. If I asked myself when I started this band what I would do if i were to play with Big D, I probably would've flipped a shit because back in the day they were a huge part of my life. Back in high school I used to listen to the Gypsy Hill EP front to back daily singing all of the words in my car on the way to and from school. Those guys were my local heroes, I really associated with what they were singing about because they totally felt for my teenage angst. There was even a point where I posted the lyrics to "Those Kids Suck" on the bathroom walls in hopes that the "white hat" kids who made my time at NHS a living hell would see them and feel like douche bags. After a two period effort of re-posting them after they would get torn down, I realized that THE MAN was gonna keep me down so long as i was in that school building. I saw them for the first time with my new friend Rory Nolan at BU Central my junior year in high school soon after we formed Interrobang!?. I felt so cool, we were on the guest list because Rory's sister Chloe was dating the Keyboard player for the opening band The Flamingos. Little did I know that these people would in time become close friends of mine. I think this was the first ska/punk show that I ever went to and I had a great time. BU Central was very cool place to see Big D for the first time seeing that there were probably somewhere around 30-40 other people there. I remember the moment I saw them walking in and I started to shake a little bit, I was just so excited I couldn't stand it. They came on and I had a spot right in front of trombonist Paul E. Cutler. Their set was awesome, raw, inspiring and totally on! I think that to this day that was the best performance I have ever seen from them. After the show I got myself a Big D T-shirt and a broken drumstick and Rory and I chatted with Dave for a good while. He seemed like a real honest and sincere guy, we even had an inside joke with him for the next time that we saw him. Where do the dogs go? To the pound [insert fist bump]. This was back when he had just started using the melodica and I had just ordered one online, so we talked about that and I was super pumped! This was such a great night, I was in ecstasy the whole way home. It was strange seeing them the next time because they were headlining the Avalon, it really made me appreciate where I saw them for the first time and I still do to this day. This was also the downfall in my eye of Mr. David McWane. When we talked to him here, he seemed like he had better things to do and this was pretty uncool. Although he did give a shout out to his "melodica friends" when he pulled it out to play a track from their new Salem Girls EP. This show was very surreal for me because I was witnessing this band for everything that they were at the time, about to achieve great success and start traveling the country as a successful national touring band.
TO BE CONTINUED

3.1 Maps & Atlases

After playing a Dance Party show for a bunch of sorority girls I grabbed Tom Chalupa and we headed off to the Middle East for a show that I was looking forward to going with him to for a while now. It had been a while since i'd gone to a show at the Middle East that I wasn't playing and this was quite the show to see. The only band I had heard before the show was Maps & Atlases but I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed all of the bands!

So Many Dynamos opened the show with a blaze of technical guitars mixed with a good blend of synthesizer and just the right amount of dance beats. Something you've heard before right? Wrong! The one thing that I can say about both opening bands was that they were both very hard to describe, which is something that I find myself usually enjoying because that means that it is origional! The guitars bordered on noisy rock with some definite Johnny Greenwood flair to them. The synths were tight and lots of awesome vocals. They most certainly had me dancing from the moment I stepped into the club.

Pattern Is Movement was next, two bearded men playing drums and rhodes piano. Vocals bordered on operatic and they had a good sense of humor but there was nothing funny about this performance. It was marvelous how the intensity of the drums blended with the vocals and keyboards so perfectly. I found myself in a trance during some point during this set and it was a beautiful feeling. One thing that they really worked well into their set was dynamics and that was something that really set them out from the other bands. Nick bought the vinyl and we listened to it right after the show as i shaved my beard into a mustache, anyways awesome band!

Maps & Atlases were next, playing all the songs that I wanted to hear and then some new ones which were very awesome and I very much look forward to hearing the studio versions. I was glad to hear a couple new ones seeing that they only played one last time I saw them. It was especially awesome rocking out with Tom at this show because he is one of the only people that knows this music in and out like I do. I found myself in an amazing groove during this show and it was awesome to just dance and sing along at one of their shows because i've seen them a couple times now and I can actually pick my jaw up off of the floor for once. Afterwards after I build the courage, I went to the guitarists and talked to them for a few minutes and they were very very cool people. I gave them one of my CDs telling them that we are nothing like you guys but we are playing with Laura Stevenson and love the RX Bandits and they thought that that was awesome. They were incredibly humble guys and were very appreciative that I was such a big support of their band. Afterwards I ran around outside in the snow for a while giggling to myself because I was so happy that they were cool guys and they appreciated me giving them a CD. What a great start to March!

2.27.09 O Pioneers!!! and !?

This was a very strange weekend to say the least...
The friday before this show we played at One Fifteen Franklin Street with Brave Little Abacus, O Pioneers, Fort! the Band and Wood Spider. It was really strange to play this place for people that weren't necessarily the ska punk crowd that is usually there. Brave Little Abacus had an awesome set and they played for a lot of new people which I was very happy about but unfortunately Adam's speakers blew and the last few minutes of El Capitano were cut. Wood Spider were a pretty decent band and a lot of their friends were getting into it, reminded me a little too much of Tom Waits meets Golgol Bordello. Next was Fort! The Band, I have decided that I am going to write an essay to this band which I will post here because I was really confused and offended by their set, I won't go any further from there. An hour and a half later, after a bunch of our friends had to late due to the length of Fort! The Bands set, we played. Interesting thing was that we played with no P.A. system but a lot of people were still really into it! It was cool to have people singing along to our songs even when they couldn't hear the words, it really put the whole sense of community at our shows into perspective. My new friend Lindsay Sanderson got lots of amusing pictures from this show. Even though it was unfortunate that there were technical difficulties it seemed that nearly everyone in these pictures had a wide smile on their face which made me very happy. O Pioneers!!! went on at somewhere near one in the morning and they were nothing less than I expected, in fact they exceeded my expectations. I bought their newest release "Neon Creeps" on vinyl and have listened to it a bunch of times, I really dig it. I had a good chat with their guitarist Eric who was a very awesome person and we got to chat about the new punk scene that is coming up. I really really want to be a part of this movement, I feel like everyone is so positive and just wants to see new places and make new friends which is everything i've ever wanted. It rides above this whole myspace out to make a buck and there is is so much more dedication and loyalty in the people that go out to the shows. He also encouraged me to ask Jeff Rosenstock to put our our next release, I have no idea what he is going to say but I am going to ask him when we play their CD release show on Saturday.

Things to look forward to...

4.18-4.19
The Dead @ DCU Center

6.11-6.14
Bonnaroo 2009!!!
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Phish (2 Shows)
Beastie Boys
Nine Inch Nails
David Byrne
Wilco
Al Green
Snoop Dogg
Elvis Costello Solo
Erykah Badu
Paul Oakenfold
Ben Harper and Relentless7
The Mars Volta
TV on the Radio
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Gov’t Mule
Andrew Bird
Band Of Horses
Merle Haggard
MGMT
moe.
The Decemberists
Girl Talk
Bon Iver
Béla Fleck & Toumani Diabate
Rodrigo y Gabriela
Galactic
The Del McCoury Band
of Montreal
Allen Toussaint
Coheed and Cambria
Booker T & the DBTs
David Grisman Quintet
Lucinda Williams
Animal Collective
Gomez
Neko Case
Down
Jenny Lewis
Santogold
Robert Earl Keen
Citizen Cope
Femi Kuti and the Positive Force
The Ting Tings
Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
Kaki King
Grizzly Bear
King Sunny Adé
Okkervil River
St. Vincent
Zac Brown Band
Raphael Saadiq
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
Crystal Castles
Tift Merritt
Brett Dennen
Mike Farris and the Roseland Rhythm Revue
Toubab Krewe
People Under the Stairs
Alejandro Escovedo
Vieux Farka Touré
Elvis Perkins In Dearland
Cherryholmes
Yeasayer
Todd Snider
Chairlift
Portugal. Set Your Goals

I have been really bad about posting here, but I will give an update with all of the concerts that I attended this fall hopefully very soon. Anyways, tonight I went to the Worcester Palladium for the first time and saw a bunch of bands.

First was Lions Lions, they played a very "warped" hardcore along the lines of Circa Survive or Chiodos. They were OK, but they are still a very young band with a lot of room to grow into something.

Next was Energy, they played with Set Your Goals at the ICC in May but unfortunately we missed there set. Their show was exactly what I expected, very much in vein of old AFI with lots and lots of woahs. It was nice to finally see them, but they didn't really meet my expectations this first time. I really enjoyed there record, but the live performance was somewhat lackluster. I soon realized that this was the fault of the venue, sold out show, very bad acoustics.

Next was A Loss For Words, local band who I am very surprised that I have never seen before. I met the singer Matt a few weeks ago at the We Are The Union show and he was surprisingly very nice and we had a good talk about pop punk, hardcore and shows in Massachusetts. I never understood what people liked about A Loss For Words when they had their first few CDs released, a little too poppy for my liking at the time. But I think they have grown into something much bigger than that. Their songs are extremely catchy and they put on a great live show, I'm proud to say that they come from a few towns over.

Every Avenue showed up with only an acoustic guitar in hand, but came with a whole list of excuses and complaints in tow, I was going to give them a chance but this really turned me off. We moved up to the balcony to see what the view was like up there.

We snagged some sweet seats and I watched the rest of the show from there. Set Your Goals were definitely the highlight of the show for me, I hadn't seen them since this summer and although they played pretty much the same set they reminded me of how good they really are. They promised a record coming soon, they are going in the studio in February. I thought, if the rest is as good as "The Fallen" this is going to be a damn good record.

Four Year Strong definitely showed some home town pride and plenty of egging on... WHAT THE FUCKS UP WORCESTER ITS GOOD TO BE HOME, I WANNA SEE THIS PLACE OPEN UP! There set was good, they played some older songs but their sound was really bad and made it irritating at times. Being the fourth time seeing them this year It was cool to see them in their hometown, but I don't plan on seeing them again till they put out a new record.

Really fun show, but all in all the Palladium was not that great of a place, reminding me of an extremely run down Lupo's. Can't wait for the new Set Your Goals record.

<img width='1' height='1' This album will certainly stand the test of time and i don't believe really should have a follow up album. If it does, then great but i believe that Ben and Jimmy both understand where popular music can lead and as long as you stayed enough untied from it all then you will be ok. They have yet to reach the point where they have sold their souls and I doubt that they ever will. So yes, The Postal Service follow up, sure bring it on. But is it necessary, no.
<img width='1' height='1' wish that I could somehow convey to others and hopefully have them experience the same. Only once before, I believe that I have had this experience but when you are amidst it and completely aware. The essence of this experience is hearing sonic capability and realizing it for its true beauty and no more. As marvelous as this is, there is no possible way of describing it in words and there is no way to understand it until you have experienced it yourself. But for the sake of remembering this experience, I shall do my best to try to retell my listening. Laying flat on my back with my primary audio source being my computer i was engulfed in the sound of what is Narrow Stairs. Once engulfed, not very much else mattered to me besides what i was hearing. Any distant sounds in my house or even thoughts in my head were gone and I was able to truly appreciate this album for what it is and no more. The opening track "Bixby Canyon Bridge" pulled me into this world which I can only describe as relaxing, comforting and assuring. This track sets the mood for the album with enough ambiance and structure at the same time, creating a perfect balance. An ambient intro which leads into a structured song which eventually dissolves into an ambient and chaotic outro with a structured and melodic vocal line which eases the song out. The following song is the only song which has been publicly released so far and that is "I Will Posses Your Heart" an eight and a half minute masterpiece. I honestly have a hard time finding words to describe this album, for this is something that you really just have to hear. After the beauty of "I Will Possess Your Heart" I fell deeper into this state of relaxation that this album put me in. The songs erased all thought from my head and even kept me from analyzing them, something which i often cant help myself from doing. Consequentially, I slowly and easily came out of this experience like it was a perfect dream. Much like the ones where you don't just wake up but slowly realize that you are awake and are in a very optimistic mindset. When I realized that i was conscious I was spoken to by none other than Ben Gibbard. He told me, "We're not the same dear, as we used to be, the seasons have changed..." and as soon as i heard this I felt his words come out of my mouth, "and so have we". Once I heard this line being completed by myself in unison with Ben Gibbard I realized what I had been going through this whole time. I look up and I was on the last track of the CD, "The Ice Is Getting Thinner". When the song had finished and the album had come to an end, within the next ten minutes as I lay there motionless, these words poured into my brain and I realized the true beauty of this album. A glorious forty four minutes and fifty seconds of a masterpiece and then the after effect it has had on me, which is still hitting me like a semi truck an hour and a half since i begun the first track.
<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4014276583056153825-1292431335365485396?l=colinslifeinmusic.blogspot.com' from one of the radio tracks off of her hit record Begin To Hope. Although I find them to be equally beautiful records, there is something about Soviet Kitsch that i always come back to. The instrumentation of this record is very simple if not just piano and vocals, which i believe is a driving element of what sets this out in a world of over produced music and made for radio hits. Regina, being classically trained in piano brings out a lot of these elements in her songwriting but at the same time knows what the people want to hear. I have yet to hear a song of hers that lacks sincerity in its vocals, which is something I love. I have seen Regina once live at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in 2007. Her performance was a great mixture and span of her writing ability. And what amazed me the most was her ability to connect with such a large crowd on such a personal level. Although she was playing the second largest stage at the festival to a bounty of fans, it felt like she was singing the songs to me personally in the comfort of my living room. There will always be a place in my heart for Regina and her music. Not only is she an amazing singer/songwriter/pianist, she seems to remain quite humble and sincere as she gains more and more attention from the public.

so sunday april 6th at 11:14 pm is where this whole thing starts
